Physics For Entertainment by Yakov Perelman. Published in 1913, a best-seller in the 1930s and long out of print, Physics for Entertainment was translated from Russian into many languages and influenced science students around the world. Among them was Grigori Yakovlevich Perelman, the Russian mathematician (unrelated to the author), who solved the Poincar conjecture, and who was awarded and rejected the Fields Medal. Grigori's father, an electrical engineer, gave him Physics for Entertainment to encourage his son's interest in mathematics. In the foreword, the book's author describes the contents as "conundrums, brain-teasers, entertaining anecdotes, and unexpected comparisons," adding, "I have quoted extensively from Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Mark Twain and other writers, because, besides providing entertainment, the fantastic experiments these writers describe may well serve as instructive illustrations at physics classes." The book's topics included how to jump from a moving car, and why, "according to the law of buoyancy, we would never drown in the Dead Sea." Ideas from this book are still used by science teachers today. Yakov Isidorovich Perelman died in the siege of Leningrad in 1942.

I grew with this book and others from the same author. I been reading them in Russian. However English translation from Russian is not very good and I can not in clear mind push my kids to read it. We still do some experiments from the book and I tell the stories but to be readable and enjoyable it needs some serious work by good editor with experience in popular science.Product details

Physics for Entertainment Yakov Perelman 9781452864471 Books Reviews
I was recommended this book from a freind and they said it was a great book so I bought the digital version being as It was cheaper than the paper back, but there is countless spelling errors and complete paragraphs that are unreadable (see picture) because of how badly it was made digital that I've given up on reading it because it takes away from the reading experience which all of the mistakes which makes me relive why it was $.99.
Although written in 20th century, the stories and style is still very interesting. I wish the paper used was better quality.
this is clearly one of my worst buy on . here is my detailed experience with this book -
1. one glance at the book and I could immediately make out that this is a pirated copy and not the original book.
2. the print quality is horrendous
3. diagrams/pictures are missing. page numbers are missing.
4. Print gone wrong in some pages.
5. The one thing that convinced me that this indeed is a photocopy was the "library seal" reproduced in a couple of the pages. (which makes me wonder how cheap a rip off this is.., pirate copying is one thing - not being good at is another
(I want my money back!!)
The book was very interesting and enlightening, but I was very disappointed with the translation/conversion from Russian. The text was totally unproofed leaving several unintelligible words and disjointed sentences.
Good examples of principles of physics. Very readable.
A classical book. However, the printing quality is pretty bad.
I read (and still keep) this book as a child few decades ago, and now I am buying it for my child. .. As a child, this book taught me much about everyday physics and physics principles. It made a difference in my life as these principles stayed with me to this day.
The book is an easy read and briefly explains principles using everyday examples. For example how come you can't get up from a chair without pushing your feed under the chair? can you catch a bullet with your hand (yes) ?.
of course you can google the answers but this is not the point, the point in finding the questions. Otherwise, all what you'll have is "42" ;-)
